PISCATAWAY, N.J. – No. 16 Rutgers men's lacrosse has a big week ahead with two ranked opponents, starting this Wednesday at No. 17 Lehigh. The team will also host No. 12 Syracuse on Sunday. Wednesday's road contest will be streamed by the
Patriot League Digital Network and have a live audio stream on
Lacrosse Talk Radio.
Rutgers is 4-2 on the season following a 15-14 overtime loss at rival Princeton Saturday.
Kieran Mullins scored five goals in that game while
Casey Rose also added a hat trick in that contest.
Attackman
Jules Heningburg ranks among the top-10 in the nation in points (sixth, 32) and assists (seventh, 17). Following Heningburg's team-leading 15 goals, three players share second place with 10 goals apiece – Mullins, Rose and midfielder
Christian Mazzone.
Rutgers is buoyed by its experience with 14 seniors this season including five starters plus key contributors at short-stick midfield (three) and faceoff (two). In addition is a mix of youth, as RU now starts three freshmen who have all joined the starting lineup since the season opener.
Tommy Coyne, an early-enrollee, has five goals and six assists in five games as a starting attackman. Redshirt freshman
Garrett Bullett, in his third year in the program, has started the past four games at defense with 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers. Last game, freshman
Ryan Gallagher moved into a starting spot on the first midfield. He has two goals and an assist this year.
The Scarlet Knights have outscored opponents 66-54 on the year. The 14 goals last game were RU's season-high. Prior to that contest, Rutgers had held opponents below 10 goals in every game.
Lehigh (5-1) joined the national rankings this week for the first time since February of 2015 after a 9-7 road win at then-No. 12 Army, the team that dealt Rutgers its first loss this season. Andrew Petit was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after scoring five goals against Army and is seventh nationally with 3.2 goals per game. Craig Chick is the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week after a seven ground ball, three caused turnover day, and is third in the country with 16 caused turnover. Connor Gaffney, the Patriot League Specialist of the Week, is 58.6 percent (78-of-133) at the 'X' this season. Goalkeeper James Spence, the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, has posted a 7.52 goals-against average and .547 save percentage this season. The team ranks in the top-10 nationally in three categories, scoring defense (sixth, 7.67 goals-against per game), ground balls (seventh, 32.67 per game), and caused turnovers (10
th, 8.33 per game).
Rutgers and Lehigh have faced off 46 times before, with Rutgers winning 38 of them. This is the first matchup between the two squads since 1990, with RU winning the past 12 times and 25 of the past 26 matchups. The teams first met in 1887, in the first ever game for Rutgers lacrosse.
