PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 11 Rutgers men's lacrosse will welcome Delaware (3-4) to High Point Solutions Stadium on Saturday night for the final nonconference game of the season at 7 pm. The Scarlet Knights (6-2) bring an 18-1 record in their past 19 home games into the matchup. The game will be streamed by BTN Plus, with Lou Brogno and Rick Mercurio on the call.
"We have to take care of ourselves and continue to get better," head coach
Brian Brecht said. "We'll learn from our mistakes. With the taste in our mouth from last year, the guys will be focused in practice and on this matchup. It will be great to have this game at home in front of our crowd. I'm confident that our team will handle their preparation and be ready for the 60 minutes on Saturday."
RU enters the contest fresh off two ranked wins last week, winning 8-7 on the road at No. 16 Lehigh Wednesday before returning home to defeat No. 12 Syracuse 14-10 in front of a record crowd of 5,048.
Jules Heningburg scored seven goals and added three assists, with two game-winning goals, in the two-win week, and was named US Lacrosse Magazine National Player of the Week and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. He leads the Big Ten with 22 goals and 42 points, which is 4
th in the NCAA. Midfielder
Christian Mazzone, a fellow senior captain, had five goals, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers last week.
RU, who drew a program-record 5,048 fans last week, have outscored opponents 49-32 at home this season. Defensively, RU is holding opponents under nine goals per game. At the LSM position,
Kyle Pless leads the team with 21 ground balls, while
Garrett Michaeli has a team-high nine caused turnovers.
Delaware opened the season with three straight wins, but has lost their last four. That stretch includes a one-goal loss to No. 7 Villanova, an OT loss at Binghamton, and a loss at No. 10 Johns Hopkins that was tied entering the fourth quarter. The Blue Hens are led offensively by Charlie Kitchen (15 goals, 24 points), Will Hirschmann (14 goals, 22 points) and Bryce Reid (17 goals). Jake Hervada is 61-of-112 (.547) on faceoffs and Matt DeLuca has a .535 save percentage in the cage. Austin Haynes leads the CAA with 2.29 caused turnovers per game. The Blue Hens are 3rd in the nation in turnovers/game (10.29), while Rutgers' opponents are averaging 15.25 per game this season.
Last season, then-No. 1 Rutgers fell at Delaware 13-9 for the team's first loss of the season.
Kieran Mullins had four goals and two assists in that game, but DeLuca made 19 saves. Rutgers is 17-10 all-time against Delaware.
