Shaban Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week
Oct 21 | Women's Soccer
Shaban, a midfielder, was instrumental in Rutgers’ 6-5, come-from-behind, double-overtime victory against visiting Miami Oct. 18. She collected her first collegiate point with an assist on RU’s fourth goal, and then scored the equalizer with seven minutes to play in regulation. She scored her second career goal in the 112th minute to lift RU to the win. Shaban’s performance against Miami was an early birthday present, as she will turn 19 on Oct. 22.
Shaban is the first Scarlet Knight to earn rookie-of-the-week honors this year. Last season, Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) twice earned the award (Sept. 3, Oct. 8), while current seniors Angel Hadaway (Sunrise, FL) and Jamie Jandasek (Brighton, MI) were acknowledged on Sept. 6 and 27, respectively, of the 1999 season. In all, Rutgers has now earned a total of 10 rookie-of-the-year certificates since RU joined the BIG EAST in 1995.
This also is the third BIG EAST weekly award for a Knight this season, as Lloyd has been named the Co-Offensive Player of the Week twice (Sept. 16, Oct. 7).
Rutgers (8-6-2) will host Loyola (8-4) on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6:00 p.m.
in the Scarlet Knights’ home finale.
