Rutgers Defeats West Virginia 3-1

Rutgers came out strong and took the first game, 30-27. With the score tied at 27, RU finished the game with three consecutive points, with a block by Lauren Venarchik (West Chester, PA) and Jennifer Hansen (Bakersfield, CA) serving as the final point. In the second game, WVU overcame a 20-12 deficit to come back and take the game, 30-27. Rutgers then rallied to win the final two games, 30-25 and 30-28.
The match was highlighted by Shayla Bush (Spokane, WA) moving into first place on the Rutgers list for digs in a single season, passing Elke Voigt-Alvord’s total of 368 in 1989. Bush now has 378 this season after accumulating 13 against the Mountaineers. In addition to her 13 digs, Bush also recorded 20 kills in the match. It was the third consecutive match Bush has tallied at least 20 kills.
Senior co-captain Pualani Tuyay (San Diego, CA) tallied 41 assists in the match for RU, while adding eight kills and 10 digs. Her 41 assists put her into fifth place on the RU single-season assists list, with 1,084 so far this season.
Venarchik added 10 total blocks on the day (one solo, nine assists) and eight kills at a .412 hitting percentage. Venarchik’s nine block assists tie a career high
West Virginia was led by Stephanie Zolna’s 28 kills and Dimitra Havriluk’s 12 digs.
Rutgers will play two matches on the road next weekend, at St. John’s on Friday, Nov. 11, and at Connecticut on Sunday, Nov. 10. RU will face the Red Storm at 7 p.m., and the Huskies at 2 p.m.
