Rutgers to Face West Virginia in BIG EAST Semifinals

Rutgers upset Miami (9-9-1, 4-1-1 BIG EAST) 4-3 in the quarterfinals Nov. 2 in Coral Gables, FL, to advance to the semifinals. The Mountaineers defeated fourth-seeded St. John’s (9-6-4, 3-3 BIG EAST) 4-0 Nov. 3 to advance to the semifinals.
In the other semifinal, No. 9 Connecticut (16-1-1, 6-0 BIG EAST) will play Villanova (14-1-4, 4-1-1 BIG EAST). The Huskies defeated Georgetown (11-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) 1-0 Nov. 2, while the Wildcats upended Boston College (11-8-1, 4-2 BIG EAST) 1-0 Nov. 3.
With its victory at Miami, RU earned its first-ever BIG EAST Tournament win. This will be the Scarlet Knights’ third appearance in the semifinals, qualifying for the semis in 1995 and 1996 when the BIG EAST Tournament was a four-team event. The Knights also played in the quarterfinals of the 2000 and 2001 BIG EAST Tournaments.
The semifinal winners will meet in the championship match Sunday, Nov. 10, at 12:00 p.m. That match will be carried live on the Madison Square Garden Network (MSG), Fox Sports Net Florida, Fox Sports Net Chicago and the New England Sports Network (NESN), as well as on tape delay later that day on Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh (12:30 p.m.) and Comcast Sports Net Philadelphia (1:00 p.m.). An automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament will be awarded to the champion of the BIG EAST Tournament. The selections for the 64-team NCAA field will be announced Monday, Nov. 11, at 4:30 p.m.
