Rutgers Ties JMU in Season Opener

RICHMOND, VA – The No. 19 Rutgers University women’s
soccer team (0-0-1) began the 2002 season with a 0-0 tie against James Madison
(0-0-1) in the first round of the Wachovia Challenge Presented by Marriott Friday,
Aug. 30, in Richmond, VA.
The two teams played 90 scoreless minutes of regulation and two, 10-minute overtimes to end in the tie. However, the Dukes advanced to the tournament final thanks to penalty kicks.
Rutgers had several scoring chances in the second half, hitting the post, but could not capitalize.
Rutgers is ranked 19th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), 15th by Soccerbuzz, 20th by SoccerTimes.com and 24th by Soccer America in the groups’ preseason polls.
Rutgers will play American (0-1) in the consolation match Sunday, Sept. 1, at 12:00 p.m.
