Rutgers Defeats American, 4-1, at Wachovia Challenge

Four different players scored for the Scarlet Knights. Following a scoreless first half, sophomore Michelle McNamara (Toms River, NJ) got Rutgers on the scoreboard in the 51st minute with her first career goal on a cross from senior Boo Schubert (Delran, NJ). Sophomore all-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) later knocked in a ball from senior Erin McIntyre (Turnersville, NJ) to make the score 2-0. American scored to cut the lead to one, but RU got goals from Schubert and junior Adrienne Dugandzic (Sicklerville, NJ) in the final eight minutes to put the match out of reach.
Senior Christine Caldwell (Wyckoff, NJ) made six saves for the victory (1-0-1).
Schubert and freshman back Kim Brandao (Rahway, NJ) were named to the Wachovia Challenge All-Tournament Team.
Rutgers is ranked 19th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), 15th by Soccerbuzz, 20th by SoccerTimes.com and 24th by Soccer America in the groups’ preseason polls.
Rutgers will play its first home match of the season when the Knights host Maryland Friday, Sept. 6, at 7:00 p.m. That match will be shown on CN8 Saturday, Sept. 7, at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1:00 p.m.
