Rutgers Ties Villanova 0-0
Sep 25 | Women's Soccer
Senior Christine Caldwell (Wyckoff, NJ) made five saves for her fifth shutout of the year (4-2-2).
RU had its best scoring chance of regulation with just less than 11 minutes
to play in the second half. Sophomore Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) got a head
on Kelly Evans’ (Saddle Brook, NJ) corner kick in the middle of the box
and sent it to the post, but Wildcat defender Jennifer Carrigan made a save
on the goal line, knocking the shot away.
It looked as if Villanova had scored the game-winning goal less than three
minutes into overtime when there was a scramble in front of the RU net and
Brittany Hunsaker knocked the ball into the goal, but the Wildcats were called
for committing a foul on Rutgers goalkeeper Christine Caldwell
(Wyckoff, NJ).
This marked the second consecutive year that the Knights and Wildcats have
played to a 0-0 tie. In all, three of the last five matches between the
teams have ended without a winner.
The shutout of Villanova marked the fifth in the last six matches for the Rutgers defense. RU now has given up one goal in the last 570:43.
Rutgers was rated seventh by Soccerbuzz and eighth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Sept. 23). RU also received votes in the SoccerTimes.com national poll. Villanova was rated fifth by Soccerbuzz and sixth by the NSCAA in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Rutgers will begin a three-match BIG EAST homestand with No. 10 West Virginia (7-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) Sunday, Sept. 29, at 12:00 p.m.
