Rutgers Rolls Past Buffalo 78-53

Rutgers (2-0) used an 18-4 run early in the second half to bury Buffalo (0-2) and send the Bulls to their 23rd straight defeat on the road.
Sean Axani had 10 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, five blocked shots and five steals for Rutgers. Shields shot 8-for-10 and 2-for-3 from 3-point range, and also had eight rebounds. Lamizana had four blocked shots, while Adrian Hill had 13 points.
Buffalo, which committed 21 turnovers after committing 25 in its opener against Canisius, got 13 points from B.J. Walker. The Bulls shot just 27.5 percent.
With Rutgers holding a 41-32 lead, Adrian Hill scored inside to start the Scarlet Knights' run. Rutgers made nine of its first 11 shots in the half to open a 59-36 lead, and Buffalo never got closer than 14. Lamizana had seven points in the run while Shields added 11.
The Knights had two 25-point leads including the final score.
Rutgers coach Gary Waters is 7-0 against Buffalo, including six wins when he coached at Kent State.
Rutgers made seven of its first 11 shots in taking a 14-4 lead and maintained its advantage throughout the first half. Buffalo cut it to 31-27 before an 8-2 run helped Rutgers regain its 10-point margin at halftime. Buffalo shot 36.7 percent in the half with 14 turnovers. Shields and Hill combined for 25 points in the half.

AXANI CAREER HIGH IN REBOUNDS, ASSISTS|
Coming off a career-high six steals
against Lafayette, senior center Sean Axani (Red Bank, NJ) established a
new career-high
in rebounds when he grabbed
his 10th of the night at the 14:26 mark of the second half. He also had six
assists in the win over Buffalo, establishing a new career high.
Additionally, Axani also recorded his first-career double-double when a slam dunk at 8:56 of the second half gave him 10 points. He finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, five steals and tied a career high with five blocks.
HILL ESTABLISHES CAREER HIGH
With 11 first half points, center Adrian Hill
(Canton, OH) set a career-high for points scored. His previous high was nine
against Seton Hall on Feb. 22,
2003. He finished with 13 points.
A BALANCED ATTACK, AGAIN
For the second time in as many games, Rutgers had
four players who finished in double-figures in scoring. Ricky Shields had a
game-high 22 points, Herve
Lamizana added 15 points, Adrian Hill chipped in with 13 points while Sean
Axani had 10 points.
WEBB MAKES FIRST CAREER START
Freshman guard Marquis Webb (Paterson, NJ) earned a starting assignment against
Buffalo, the first of his career. He finished the game with five points and
six assists in 29 minutes.
QUICK OUT OF THE BLOCKS
Over the first 5:02 of the first half, the Rutgers defense held Buffalo to
just two field goals (2-of-6) and jumped out to a 12-4 lead. The Scarlet
Knights also forced three turnovers.
HAZARD MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE
Eric Hazard (Long Branch, NJ), a product of St.
Benedicts Prep, made his first career appearance as a Scarlet Knight, entering
the game with 4:16 remaining
in the first half.
KEATING MAKES RU DEBUT
Shayle Keating (Teaneck, NJ) made his first career appearance
in a Rutgers uniform when he entered the game late in the second half. Keating
is a product
of Seton Hall Prep, one of the top scholastic programs in New Jersey. He scored
his first career points on a lay-up with 1:20 to play in regulation.
Everyone who dressed tonight for Rutgers played. Freshman guard Jon Mimmo,
also made his first career appearance.
