Rutgers Defeats St. Mary's in Home Opener 66-58
Nov 27 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Sophomore guard Quincy Douby scored 21 points and hit the basket that put Rutgers ahead to stay in a 66-58 victory over St. Mary's Saturday night.
Playing its home opener, Rutgers (2-0) handed St. Mary's (4-3) its first loss in three road games, although the Gaels also have two defeats on neutral courts against nationally-ranked foes Memphis and Mississippi State. St. Mary's of the West Coast Conference owns road victories over Pac-10 member California as well as UNLV.
A putback by St. Mary's Frederic Adjiwanou, who had 13 points, gave St. Mary's a 44-42 lead midway through the second half. But Adjiwanou missed the ensuing free throw on the three-point play attempt and Douby drilled a three-pointer that gave the Scarlet Knights a 45-44 lead with 10:15 remaining, and they never trailed again.
Douby's three-pointer started Rutgers on a 10-0 run, allowing the Knights to equal their largest lead of the game at 52-44. But St. Mary's got to within 61-58 with 1:54 remaining on a putback by Daniel Kickert.
Douby then fed sophomore center Byron Joynes for an emphatic slam which staked the Scarlet Knights to a 63-58 lead with 1:21 left. That started Rutgers on a 5-0 run to end the game, with senior guard Juel Wiggan's fast-break layup with 22.3 seconds left sealing the win.
Both teams shot just 1-for-5 from the foul line in the final four minutes. St. Mary's was 5-for-14 for the game and Rutgers 9-for-20.
