Lloyd Named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year

STORRS, CT - Rutgers senior Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women's Soccer Midfielder of the Year, teammate Kim Brandao (Rahway, NJ) has been named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and Zoe Avner (Paris, France) has earned a spot on the All-Third Team, the league office has announced.

Lloyd, who also became the first Scarlet Knight to earn first-team all-BIG EAST honors four times during her career (2001-2004), ended the season with 21 points (10 g, 1 a) to finish her career as Rutgers' all-time leader in points (117) and goals (50). The three-time All-American began the season as a candidate for the Hermann Trophy, given annually to the top player in the nation, and was a three-time member of the U.S. Under-21 National Team. The 2001 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, she is the first Scarlet Knight to be named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year.

Brandao, a junior back, has started every match during her career "On the Banks," earning her second selection to the All-BIG EAST Second Team (2003-2004). She led a RU defense this year that allowed just 0.82 goal and 6.9 shots per contest this fall. Brandao also was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team in 2002, and was a two-time honoree this year as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.

Avner, a junior midfielder, has also started every match of her Rutgers career. This season, she posted two assists for two points, adding to her rookie year total of two points (2 a) in 2003.

This marks the first time in school history that three Scarlet Knights have earned all-BIG EAST honors. Rutgers finished the season with a 9-10-1 mark overall and a 4-5-1 record in conference play, advancing to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
