Rutgers Rolls Past Rhode Island 72-58
Dec 11 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Sophomore guard Quincy Douby scored 21 points, senior guard Ricky Shields added 18 and freshman forward Ollie Bailey recorded his first career 'double-double' with 11 points and 10 rebounds, as Rutgers used a big first half for a 72-58 win over Rhode Island Saturday night in front of 6,929 fans at the RAC.
The Scarlet Knights switching between man-to-man and zone defenses, forced Rhode Island into 19.2 percent shooting (5-for-26) in the first half, while shooting 52% themselves en route to seizing a commanding 37-16 halftime lead.
Rhode Island opened the second half on a 15-3 run to slice the lead to 40-31 with 15:04 left in the game but that was as close as the Rams would get as Douby knifed his way into the paint for a layup that gave Rutgers a double-digit advantage once again.
The Scarlet Knights (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak while handing Rhode Island (2-6) its sixth loss in seven games.
After being held to one field goal in the final 13:39 of its game against Princeton Wednesday night, Rutgers reversed that trend in the first half against the Rams. With the score tied at 7-7, Rutgers embarked on a 27-4 run to open a 34-11 lead. Shields had nine points and Douby seven during the run.
After Jon Lucky hit a 3-pointer to pull Rhode Island within 15-10, Rutgers scored 19 of the next 20 points as the Rams went 9:55 without a basket.
Scott Hazelton paced Rhode Island with 19 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.
Rutgers sophomore guard Marquis Webb had a fine floor game, scoring a season-high 12 points, while grabbing three rebounds, dishing out four assists and not committing a single turnover in 37 minutes of action.
POSTGAME NOTES

Additionally, the Scarlet Knights held Rhode Island to a season-low 19.2 percent (5-for-26) shooting in the first half. The last time Rutgers held an opponent under 20 percent shooting in a half was in a 54-41 victory against Morris Brown (first half, 15.0 percent, 12/28/02).
