Rutgers Falls to Princeton 53-40

PRINCETON, NJ - Judson Wallace scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and freshman Noah Savage scored a career-high 16 points as Princeton overcame cold-shooting Rutgers 53-40 Wednesday night in front of 5,135 fans at Jadwin Gymnasium.

Princeton (4-2) gave first-year head coach Joe Scott a victory in his home debut while sending Rutgers (2-3) to its third straight defeat. The Tigers snapped a five-game losing streak in the series against Rutgers.

Rutgers led 23-20 at the half and after scoring 10 straight points, took a 33-27 lead with 13:39 remaining. From that point on, the Scarlet Knights made just one basket as the Tigers outscored them, 26-7. Rutgers' zone defense was largely effective, limiting Princeton to 38.3% from the field and 31.4% from three-point range (11-of-35). Rutgers, however, was just 3-of-13 on its three-point shot attempts.

It was Rutgers' lowest point total since a 56-38 loss to Temple on Dec. 19, 1998. Rutgers shot 33.3 percent overall and 20 percent in the second half.

Princeton went ahead to stay when Wallace hit a 3-pointer to make it 34-33 with 9:47 remaining. With the score 41-38, Princeton used an 8-1 run to open a 10-point lead that sealed it with 1:35 left.

Princeton had a 33-30 rebounding advantage. Senior guard Ricky Shields, sophomore guard Quincy Douby and freshman power forward Ollie Bailey each had 11 points for Rutgers. Bailey was 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
