Douby, Farmer Guide Rutgers Past Temple 67-53
Nov 30 | Men's Basketball
Douby had 21 of his season-high 27 points in the second half, and Farmer provided a much-needed offensive punch with 13 second-half points on four-of-five shooting. Douby hit eight-of-17 field goals, was 9-of-10 from the foul line, dished out four assists, blocked three shots, and added one steal while playing all 40 minutes. Equally as impressive, the Rutgers defense limited Temple to just 28.0 percent shooting (14-50), and the Owls missed 18 consecutive three-pointers after starting the game five-for-six.
Rutgers gutted out the victory despite being without junior forward Adrian Hill, who was nursing a sore knee. Also plagued by foul trouble to junior swingman Marquis Webb and junior center Bryon Joynes, RU turned to three freshmen - Farmer, J.R. Inman and Jaron Griffin - for long stretches of the second half, and the newcomers responded admirably. They combined to play 89 minutes with 19 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Inman grabbed a key offensive rebound and buried a jumper with under six minutes to play that gave RU a six-point advantage, 46-40.
Coming out of halftime, three-pointers by Webb and Farmer gave RU its first lead (26-24, 18:24), and the Scarlet Knights would not trail again. Leading 30-29 at the 16:32 mark, Douby ignited a 9-2 run with a three pointer, and Farmer finished it with a jumper to make the score 39-31. Temple clawed back to within one point (39-38, 9:16) before RU went on a 12-2 run to seal seize a comfortable 11-point lead at 51-40 with 4:02 left. The Knights sealed the win by hitting 12-of-13 free throws in the final five minutes of regulation.
Temple All-America candidate Mardy Collins, who entered the game averaging a team-best 17 points per game, was limited to just 11 points on one-of-nine shooting. Rutgers also out-rebounded the Owls, 37-36, despite missing Hill and seeing Joynes play just 17 minutes due to foul trouble.
Rutgers started out slow, missing its first seven field goals and shooting just 33.3 percent in the first half. The Scarlet Knights stayed in the game with their gritty defensive effort, holding the Owls to just 24.0 percent shooting (6-of-25) in the opening stanza. Temple made just one two-point field goal, as 15 of their 23 points came on three-pointers.
Facing a 12-point deficit with 9:49 remaining in the first half, Rutgers finished on a 14-5 run, limiting the Owls to just two field goals over the remainder of the half (2-for-12) to trail by just three points at intermission. A lay-up by Jimmie Inglis with two seconds left sent RU into the locker room with momentum, and they quickly built on that early in the second half.
