Gomes scored 20 or more points for the 15th time this season while Donnie McGrath added 17 points, shooting 5-for-7 on 3-pointers, for the Friars (11-13, 1-9).
Sophomore forward Ollie Bailey led the Scarlet Knights (8-13, 2-9) with 15 points and seven rebounds while senior guard Ricky Shields and sophomore backcourt mate Quincy Douby each had 13.
Shields hit his school-record 243rd career 3-pointer 9:13 into the first half, surpassing Geoff Billet. He went 3-for-9 on 3s, giving him 245. Billet had 242 from 1995-1999.
The Friars opened a 48-28 lead on Kotti's three-point play with 16:44 to play, before Rutgers rallied with a 14-4 run, closing the gap to 10 on Shields' 3-pointer with 12:13 left.
The Friars pushed it back to 59-46, but the Scarlet Knights cut it to 59-53 on Bailey's turnaround in the lane with just under eight minutes to play. Rutgers had won its finest shooting halfs in he second half vss. PC, shooting 53.3% on 16-of-30 shooting.
Kotti, who also had a career-high 11 rebounds, then hit consecutive turnaround jumpers and Gomes nailed a 3-pointer and a short jumper during a 9-2 run as Providence pulled away. The Friars, who held Rutgers to its second-lowest scoring half of the season, led 37-22 at halftime. Providence shot 57 percent (16-of-28) in the first half, while the Scarlet Knights hit just 33 percent (10-of-30).
Sophomore center Byron Joynes had another solid game for RU, tying his career high with 10 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Senior guard Juel Wiggan had 11 points and dished out a season-high seven assists.
Rutger is next in action on Wedsnesday night when they travel to Boston College for a 7:30 p.m. tilt. The Rutgers-BC game will not be televised.
POSTGAME NOTES
JOYNES MATCHES CAREER POINT TOTAL, CONTNUES TO IMPRESS IN BIG EAST PLAY
Sophomore center Byron Joynes matched his career high with 10 points against Providence. He also pulled down seven rebounds against the Friars. Joynes is averaging a team-best 5.6 rebounds, also contributing 5.6 points in BIG EAST play.
SHIELDS TAKES SOLE POSSESSION OF RUTGERS THREE-POINT RECORD
Senior guard Ricky Shields netted a a trio of three-pointers against Providence to grab sole possession of the school's three-point record. He entered the game tied with Geoff Billet (1995-1999) with 242 career three-point field goals. He now has 245 career three-pointers in 113 career games.
SHIELDS MOVES INTO TIE FOR NINTH PLACE ON CAREER SCORING LIST
With 13 points against Providence, senior guard Ricky Shields moved into a tie for ninth place on the Rutgers all-time scoring list with Geoff Billlet (1995-1999) with 1,480 career points. Next on the list is Roy Hinson (1979-1983) with 1,525 career points.

Besides his career scoring numbers, he is among the top-20 all-time in nine categories and the top-40 all-time in one other, including career three-point field goal attempts (1st), career three-point field goals made (1st), total field goal attempts (7th), career
three-point percentage (12th), career free throw percentage (T-12th), career field goals made (13th), career steals (17th), free throws made (17th), career assists (19th) and career rebounds (35th).
BAILEY PICKING UP THE PACE
Freshman forward Ollie Bailey is averaging 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds in his last four games, shooting 20-of-37 (.541) from the field during the stretch. He finished the Providence game with 15 points on 6-of-9 (.667) shooting from the floor and seven rebounds in 33 minutes of action. He has registered at least five rebounds in six of his last eight games.
WIGGAN STEPS UP GAME IN CONFERENCE PLAY
Senior guard Juel Wiggan is averaging 9.5 points and 2.9 assists (third on the team in both categories) in Rutgers' 11 BIG EAST games. He has scored 11 points in each of the last two games, while registering a season-high seven assists and two steals in 35 minutes of action against Providence.
