Rutgers Men's Basketball Holds Annual Awards Banquet

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rutgers University Men’s Basketball program held its Annual Awards Banquet at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Brunswick on Sunday, April 10. The event was co-sponsored by the Court Club and the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Senior guard Ricky Shields and sophomore guard Quincy Douby were named Co-MVPs. Shields finished second on the team in scoring and third on the team in rebounding, after averaging 13.0 ppg. and 3.9 rebounds per game. During the 2004-05 season, the Upper Marlboro, MD native established the school for career three-pointers made with 265 and finished his stellar career with 1,579 points, to place eighth on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Douby, a native of Brooklyn, NY, led the team in scoring (15.1), assists (3.38) and steals (1.2). Douby averaged 18.3 ppg. in his last six games, scoring at least 14 points in each contest during the span. He finished his sophomore season ranked seventh in RU history in career three-pointers made with 135 and attempted with 357. On the season, Douby scored at least 19 points in 10 games. Douby was also awarded a plaque for being the team’s assist leader with 98.
The Frank Hill Award, which goes to the Scarlet Knight player who best exemplifies the qualities of loyalty and leadership, also went to senior guard Ricky Shields, while Shields picked up yet another honor by winning The Best Three-point Shooter Award.
Senior guard Juel Wiggan (Bronx. NY) received a Recognition Award for his service as team captain, along with fellow senior co-captain Ricky Shields. Wiggan also received a plaque as the team’s Best Free Throw Shooter as he connected on 80 percent of his free throws in 2004-05.
Sophomore center Byron Joynes (Baltimore, MD) earned three awards: The Most Improved Player Award, the Strength Award, as well as The Leading Rebounder Award (5.7). Freshman forward Ollie Bailey (Chicago, IL), a member of the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team, earned the team’s Outstanding Newcomer Award winner following a season where he averaged 9.7 ppg. and 4.4 rpg.
Sophomore guard Marquis Webb (Paterson, NJ) was the recipient of the Best Defensive Player Award as well as the Academic Improvement Award, while sophomore guard Jon Mimmo (Linwood, NJ) received the Scholar-Athlete Award.
The winner of the 2004-05 Sportsmanship Award was shared by sophomore guard Shayle Keating (Teaneck, NJ) and freshman forward Dan Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI).
A highlight of the banquet was when Gene Armstead, a 6-9 center who starred at Rutgers from 1970-73, was formally inducted into the Rutgers Men’s Basketball Hall of Award.
