Rutgers Drops BIG EAST Opener to Seton Hall 1-0
Sep 16 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women's soccer team (2-4, 0-1 BIG EAST) was unable to capitalize on several late chances, losing its BIG EAST Conference opener 1-0 to Seton Hall (5-1-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) Sept. 16 at Yurcak Field.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the ninth minute, when Mary Ronau sailed the corner kick across the box and snuck the ball inside the far post.
RU had its chances in the second half, including an Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) corner kick that SHU keeper Amanda Becker did well to punch over the cross bar. The Scarlet Knights showed better pressure in the offensive third following the intermission, but were unable to get the equalizer.
'They came out and scored early, and we changed the way we were playing,' said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. 'In the second half we were better. We have had excellent training sessions this week, as good as we've had since I've been here. It's been intense and competitive. That's just not translating to the matches right now.'
Redshirt junior Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) did not make a save, as the Pirates had just two shots to Rutgers' five.
RU will continue its three-match homestand Tuesday, Sept. 20, when the Scarlet Knights host Loyola (MD) at 7:00 p.m.
