Scarlet Knight Comeback Falls Short
Sep 23 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, NJ) scored a late goal to pull the Rutgers women’s soccer team back to within one, but a Hoya score in the 88th minute secured a 3-1 Georgetown (8-1-1, 1-0-1 BIG EAST) victory at Rutgers (3-5, 0-2 BIG EAST) Sept. 23.
Georgetown took early control of the match, striking twice in the first 25 minutes. Alexandra Hardy headed in Karen Waskewich’s cross in the 23rd minute, followed by a Sara Jordan corner kick goal just 2:33 later.
However, the Scarlet Knights came out of the locker room and dominated the second half, creating excellent scoring opportunities throughout the final 45 minutes. Esposito finally converted one of those chances at the 76:44 mark when she turned on her defender and faced up to the goal, striking a shot from the middle of the box to cut the Hoyas’ advantage in half (2-1). But, Georgetown converted its only opportunity of the second stanza, as Brittany Berry notched an unassisted goal from the middle of the box with 2:18 to play, sealing the victory for Georgetown.
RU’s dominance in the second half was evidenced by a 7-1 shot differential (7-3 total for the match), and a 6-0 edge on corner kicks (9-1 total).
“It’s safe to say that we didn’t play up to our capability in the first half,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “It’s really about individuals getting prepared to play the match from the beginning. We’re too good for what’s happening. The matches we have lost are the ones we weren’t there for 90 minutes. We finally did that against Loyola, and we came through in the end (1-0 overtime victory Sept. 20). This is part of being a young team. We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores out there, but it’s time for them to grow up, and we have the upperclassmen available to help them do that.”
RU will finish the weekend with a 1:00 p.m. match at Villanova Sunday, Sept. 25.
