Roarty's Goal Lifts Rutgers to 1-0 Victory
Sep 20 | Women's Soccer
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman Courtney Roarty’s (Edison, NJ) first career goal was an opportune one, as the Rutgers women’s soccer team (3-4) defeated Loyola (4-4) 1-0 in overtime Sept. 20 at Yurcak Field.
Rutgers had two excellent chances midway through the first half. Freshman Nina Montero (Vineland, NJ) moved through the left side of the box, drawing out the Greyhound goalkeeper, and slid the ball to Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, NJ) in the middle of the six. Edmonds had an excellent opportunity, but two Loyola defenders were waiting on the goal line, and cleared the ball to save the goal. Then, just 90 seconds later, Edmonds was just onsides as she ran onto a ball 30 yards from the goal. Amanda Piccirilli charged out of her goal, and Edmonds just missed an empty net with a long, looping shot.
Loyola had the best opportunity of the second half on a corner kick in the 57th minute, but RU sophomore Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, NJ) cleared the ball off the goal line to keep the match scoreless.
Two minutes into the overtime, Edmonds struck a solid shot from the right side of the box, and Piccirilli knocked it down. But Roarty was waiting for the deflection, and she calmly struck it past the Loyola keeper for the game winner in the 93rd minute.
“I’m really happy for the girls,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “I thought they deserved it. Our training sessions have been excellent, and that was finally rewarded. Now we just have to get back on track in the BIG EAST. Tonight is definitely something to build on.”
Redshirt junior Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made two saves for the Scarlet Knights (3-4), who snapped a four-match losing streak with the overtime triumph.
RU will finish its three-match homestand Friday, Sept. 23, when the Scarlet Knights host Georgetown at 7:00 p.m.
