Rutgers Women's Soccer Ties Monmouth, 2-2

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (3-6-1) and Monmouth (2-4-2) played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie Sept. 27 at Yurcak Field.
The Hawks struck immediately, when Kate Sands carried the ball down the left side and struck a shot inside the far post. That lead didn’t last long, though, as RU evened the match in the 18th minute. Sophomore Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) had the ball on the left side of the box, and cut it back to freshman Kristen Edmonds (Metuchen, NJ), who was waiting at the corner. She then redirected it to Courtney Roarty (Edison, NJ), who side-stepped a defender in the center of the six-yard box and drilled home her second goal of the season.
The Scarlet Knights nearly added a second goal three minutes later off a corner kick, but freshman Alicia Hall’s (Port Republic, NJ) shot was knocked down at the left post by a Monmouth defender.
Rutgers pushed ahead 13 minutes into the second half, as Hall sent a through-ball to Edmonds, who ran on and smacked a 15-yard shot, scoring her fifth goal of the season. That Scarlet Knight advantage lasted until the 65th minute, when Megan Manney knocked in a rebound off of a Monmouth corner.
“I wish we had come out a little stronger,” said sixth-year Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. “We had a lot of variety in the attack, and had a lot of good opportunities. We were down 1-0, but come back and take a 2-1 lead. The great disappointment is that we weren’t able to hold that lead or add to it.”
RU will play two BIG EAST Conference cross-divisional matches on the road this weekend, playing at West Virginia Friday, Sept. 30, at 7:00 p.m. and Pittsburgh Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1:00 p.m.
