Cincinnati Holds Off Rutgers 71-66
Jan 22 | Men's Basketball
CINCINNATI, OH - Freshman guard Devan Downey scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Cincinnati Bearcats to a hard-fought 71-66 BIG EAST victory over Rutgers.
With the loss, the Scarlet Knights fall to 12-6 (2-3 BIG EAST), while Cincinnati improved to 14-5, (3-2 BIG EAST).
RU junior guard Quincy Douby, the BIG EAST's leading scorer, coming into the contest with a 23.5 average, paced the Scarlet Knights with 19 points. The Scarlet Knights received a career-high 16-point outing off the bench from senior center Jimmie Inglis, who shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and added eight rebounds, which tied his career high. Rutgers had a balanced offensive attack with freshman forward JR Inman and freshman point guard Anthony Farmer adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Cincinnati led 28-24 at halftime in a defensive-minded opening stanza.
In the second half, the quick and athletic Bearcats got their fastbreak game going, and opened up a 50-38 lead on a Downey bucket which forced the Scarlet Knights to call their final time out with 12:00 left in the game.
Rutgers then responded with a 19-7 run to tie the game at 57-57, keyed by a pair of three-point jumpers by Inman and another three pointer each by Farmer and junior swingman Marquis Webb. Rutgers took the lead at 59-58 as Douby banked in a runner with 4:44 left in the game. James White then drilled a three-point jumper with 4:32 left to play to give Cincinnati the lead for good. The Bearcats closed the game with a 13-7 spurt to seal the win.
The gritty, gutty Scarlet Knights did have a chance in the waning seconds as a Douby layup drew Rutgers to within 69-66. The Knights had the ball with a chance to tie the game but Douby turned the ball over with 16.6 seconds left and Rutgers was forced to foul.
Rutgers was playing without the services of 6-8, 235-pound junior power forward Adrian Hill, RU's most athletic big man, who tweaked his surgically-repaired vs. Pittsburgh in the Scarlet Knights' previous game. Despite missing Hill, RU had the edge in the rebounding department, 39-32. The most telling statistic in the game, however, was turnovers as Rutgers turned the ball over 15 times while Cincinnati had only five turnovers.
Scarlet Knight junior center Byron Joynes pulled down 10 of his season-high 11 rebounds in the first half before being slowed in the second half with an ankle injury that he suffered in the first half.?? Joynes did a nice defensive job on UC's main inside threat, Eric Hicks, during his 19-minute stint. ?? Joynes' defensive effort helped limit the 6-6, 245-pounder when he was in the game. Hicks wound up with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Rutgers returns home to host Providence at the RAC on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in another BIG EAST tilt. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
