Rutgers Knocks Off #22/23 Louisville, 65-56
Jan 28 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior guard Quincy Douby netted a game-high 19 points as Rutgers held No. 22 Louisville scoreless in the final three minutes of the second half to register an impressive 65-56 victory over the Cardinals before a raucous, sold-out crowd of 8,096 at the RAC on Saturday afternoon.
The victory over the Cardinals marked the Scarlet Knights' first victory over a ranked opponent this season. It is Rutgers' eighth win over a top-25 foe under fifth-year head coach Gary Waters and the 25th win over a ranked opponent in school history.
In addition to Douby's 19 points, the Scarlet Knights also received a strong all-around game from freshman forward JR Inman, who had 13 points, five rebounds and a career-high five blocks. Sophomore forward Ollie Bailey came off the bench with 12 points in a spirited 17-minute stint, including a slam dunk with 2:36 to play that gave RU the lead for good.
Rutgers raced out to its biggest lead of the game at 31-15 with 6:43 to play on a Douby layup and held a 39-28 edge at the half. But the Cardinals responded with a 29-14 run to open the second half to take a 54-53 lead on a pair of free throws by freshman Terrence Williams with just over four minutes remaining. Inman responded with a 3-pointer before Louisville guard Taquan Dean nailed a long jumper to forge a 56-56 tie with 3:03 left. The New Jersey native led the Cardinals with 13 points, but shot just five-of-13 from the floor in 27 minutes, thanks in large measure to the relentless defense employed by RU junior guard Marquis Webb.
Rutgers held Louisville without a point down the stretch, closing the game with a 9-0 run to record its first win over a ranked opponent since January 10, 2004, when it the Knights beat then No. 25 Providence.
Bailey started the burst with a dunk and Douby followed with a steal and a fast-break layup. Juan Palacios missed a shot with under two minutes left and Bailey pushed the advantage to 62-56 with 1:22 to go. Douby then made 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
The BIG EAST's leading scorer, Douby made 6-of-16 shots, including 2-of-7 from the arc for the Scarlet Knights, who scored 13 fast-break points. Douby scored five points in an 18-3 spurt that gave Rutgers a 31-15 edge with 6:51 left in the first half, which ended with the Scarlet Knights holding a 39-28 lead.
Freshman point guard Anthony Farmer, who injured his right wrist vs. Villanova on Jan. 11, played for the first time with a wrap on that wrist and he played a terrific floor game, matching his career-high eight assists while committing just two turnovers. He also scored six points and hauled in a career-tying five rebounds. A strong perimeter defensive effort help hold the Cardinals to just 20-of-59 shooting (.339) and six-of-22 (.273) from beyond the arc.
Rutgers is next in action on Wednesday at Syracuse. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
