Undermanned Rutgers Falls at Notre Dame, 90-63

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Rutgers men's basketball team dropped a 90-63 decision to Notre Dame on Wednesday night at the Joyce Center in South Bend, IN. The Scarlet Knights, who have lost three integral members of their team to injury in the past eight days, saw their third starter go down to injury against the Irish.

Junior forward Adrian Hill had surgery on his knee last week and will miss the remainder of the season, while freshman starter JR Inman is sidelined for the next four to six weeks with a fractured fibula in his right leg. Fellow freshman starter Anthony Farmer suffered a bruised shoulder in practice on Tuesday and was unable to play against Notre Dame (11-10, 2-8 BIG EAST). The Scarlet Knights (13-10, 3-7 BIG EAST) lost their third starter in the first half of the contest as junior center Byron Joynes, the team's leading rebounder, was forced to the sidelines eight minutes in after re-aggravating a foot injury.

The scrappy Scarlet Knights had another spectacular performance from junior All-America candidate Quincy Douby. The guard, who leads the BIG EAST in scoring, topped the 20-point mark for the 16th time in the past 20 games with a game-high 27 points against Notre Dame. He added five rebounds, four assists and a steal, while making all eight of his free throw attempts in 37 minutes of action. The junior topped the 1,400-point mark for his career, passing John Battle (1981-85) and Jeff Greer (1997-2001) to move into 13th place on the Scarlet Knights' all-time scoring list with 1,403 career points.

Junior Marquis Webb, who moved from his small forward position to point guard in RU's re-shuffled starting lineup, posted his eighth double-digit scoring effort in the past nine games with 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, connecting on both of his three-point attempts and 4-of-5 free throw attempts. Webb also registered five assists and four rebounds.

Webb moved to point guard, filling in for Farmer, while freshman Jaron Griffin made his second career start (first was at DePaul on Jan. 15), filling in for Webb's vacated small forward spot. Sophomore Ollie Bailey replaced Inman at power forward.??

A depleted Rutgers squad met a hot shooting Notre Dame team that shot 59 percent from the field (33-of-56) and 48 percent from three-point range (10-of-21). Torin Francis led four players in double figures for the Irish with 21 points.

Sophomore center Dan Waterstradt stepped in to play valuable minutes for the Scarlet Knights on Wednesday. He matched his career high with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field against Notre Dame, also recording six rebounds in a season-long 18 minutes of action.?? ??

Rutgers shot a season-best 93 percent from the free throw line against Notre Dame, finishing 14-of-15 from the charity stripe.

The Scarlet Knights return home to host Marquette on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
