RU Men's Basketball Announces Two Staff Additions

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Sean Codey has been named Director of Video Operations and Jay Joyner has been named Director of Player Development at Rutgers University, head basketball coach Fred Hill announced today.

Codey, 31, a native of Orange and a resident of Avon, has a wealth of administrative and coaching experience. From 1999-2002, he served as Director of Basketball Operations at DePaul, where his responsibilities included coordinating team travel and meals for the Blue Demons, as well as directing the film exchange program, working with the recruiting program and overseeing daily operations of the DePaul Basketball Schools. Prior to being promoted to Director of Basketball Operations, Codey was a graduate assistant coach for the Blue Demons in 1998-99, serving as video director and coordinating the Blue Demons’ film exchange program. He was also involved in scouting, and assisted in the development and planning of the DePaul Basketball Schools.
Since 2002, Codey has served as Assistant Director of Sales and Marketing at Real Time, Inc., a Newark-based import/export firm. Codey’s basketball background also includes a two-year stint (2003-05) as an assistant coach for the West Orange Warriors, an under-17 AAU team. In July, 2005, Codey served as a coach/counselor at ABCD Camp in Teaneck.
In his new position at Rutgers, Codey’s responsibilities will include overseeing the video needs for the Rutgers basketball program, including the organization of the film exchange program, and the video scouting schedule. Codey will also be in charge of breaking down film for opponent scouting and self-evaluation, filming all practices and games, and supervising the staff of student managers.
“I am very excited to have the opportunity to join Coach Hill’s staff and to be a part of the Rutgers basketball program,” said Codey. “I have always had a great respect for Coach Hill and am thrilled to be a member of his staff. We’re all focused on one goal, to take this program to the next level.”
Codey, a 1997 graduate of Seton Hall University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice, was a member of the Pirates’ basketball team for two seasons. A 1992 graduate of St. Rose High School of Belmar, Codey began his collegiate career at Long Island University, where he played guard for the Blackbirds.

In the newly created position of Director of Player Development, Joyner will interact with Scarlet Knight players on a daily basis, impacting their lives on a variety of levels. Included among Joyner’s administrative duties will be scheduling personal and team peer exercises, scheduling student-athlete mentoring programs on and off campus, and assisting with the coordination and monitoring of individual player’s complete daily schedules. Joyners’ responsibilities will also include working with the video coordinator to enhance an individual’s athletic performance, assisting in all basketball-related events on campus, monitoring study halls and coordinating student-athlete documentation as it relates to NCAA compliance.
“As the head coach at Rutgers, my charge is to oversee a program that develops our student-athletes as students, players and people, and the addition of Jay Joyner will help our program immensely,” said Hill. “Jay is a well-respected individual whose broad-based experience will benefit our young men on many levels.
“Jay has an outstanding feel for the demands that today’s student-athletes face and thus will be a key component in our equation for success,” Hill continued. “I believe in surrounding our players with as many quality people as possible. We are charged with developing the ‘total’ person and I know that Jay will be a major asset in that effort.”
Joyner, 32, has served in several administrative and coaching positions in college and high school basketball for the past five years. A native of Amityville, NY, Joyner was a three-year letterwinner at South Carolina State, from 1993-96. He comes to Rutgers from Columbia State Community College in Columbia, TN, where he spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant coach.
From 2003-05, Joyner served as an administrative assistant/assistant strength coach at Tennessee State University, where he was involved in a variety of day-to-day operations within the men’s basketball program, including arranging home and away practice times, organizing team travel, coordinating film exchange, coaching clinics and monitoring academic progress, as well as managing the strength and conditioning program. Prior to joining the staff at Tennessee State, Joyner served as assistant boys’ varsity coach at Centennial High School in Franklin, TN., in 2002-03.
“I am thrilled to be returning to the Northeast and continuing my career at Rutgers University,” said Joyner. “I have always held Rutgers in high esteem and respect Fred Hill’s passion and vision for the program. As a member of this staff, I’ll have a unique opportunity to impact the lives of our players. I’m extremely excited about this opportunity.”
Joyner has played professional basketball overseas, including a one-year stint with Canaria De La Laguna, a team based in the Canary Islands. Joyner, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Middle Tennessee State University, and his wife Chartarra have three children.
