PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rutgers women's soccer team saw their three game BIG EAST unbeaten streak come to an end as they fell to Providence 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Friars scored in the first five minutes of the first half, and despite out-shooting their opponent 23-9, Rutgers was unable to pick up the equalizer. Sophomore goalie Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) stopped five shots in the loss.
"It was a disappointing result," said head coach Glenn Crooks. "We had a large number of opportunities to equalize but we just could not get the ball into the goal. We had chances from every angle and distance, but they just did not work out for us."
Rutgers falls to 6-5-2 and 1-2-2 in the BIG EAST. Providence improves to 2-9-1 and 1-4-0 in conference play.
"We made it very hard for us post-season wise with the loss," said Crooks. "But we will focus on our next game against Louisville and work hard to get back to the level we expect to be. We look forward to facing the Cardinals in front of a national audience."
RU faces Louisville at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 in Louisville, Ky. That game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Channel.
