Rutgers Field Hockey Registers 3-2 Win Over Maine

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 16 Rutgers field hockey team posted a 3-2 victory over Maine on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Providence College.
“We really improved on being able to spread the ball around the field more and communicating who needed touches,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “We gained insight and experience and evenly distributed the ball better. Maine was able to counter attack us. In the second, we tried to force the ball through the middle too much. But all in all, it was a positive improvement on the previous game.”
Junior Katie Feeley (Collingswood, N.J.) scored and had an assist for the Scarlet Knights who won for the 11th time this season. The 11 wins are the most for the program since 1998. That squad finished the season with 13 victories.
The Scarlet Knights scored first in the ninth minute of play when Feeley fed the ball up the middle, finding teammate Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.). Lewis scored on a reverse shot to give RU a 1-0 edge.
Off a penalty corner, Maine tied the contest at 1-1 on a goal by Courtney Veinotte. Rutgers would respond less than five minutes later with the game-winner. Junior Melissa Bowman (Ronks, Pa.) converted the shot into the right lower corner off a pass from Sarah Dunn for the 2-1 edge and a lead the Scarlet Knights would not relinquish.
In the second half, Feely and Lewis teamed for the squad’s third tally of the afternoon. Maine would score a late goal – in the final 47 seconds – to make the final 3-2.
Rutgers hosts Delaware on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at RU Stadium Complex.
