No. 19 Rutgers Registers 2-1 Win over Delaware

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior Jessika Hoh (Allentown, Pa.) tipped in the winning goal with just under eight minutes remaining to lift Rutgers to a 2-1 win over Delaware in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday evening at RU Stadium Complex.
“It’s all about reading the specific play and reading the situation,” said head coach Liz Tchou. “I was very happy with our attacks, our transition and our defense to attack transition which was a ton better. Our first look is forward and now the backs can really hit the forwards on the run. I am very happy with the balance on this team.”
The Scarlet Knights (12-3) took the early lead on a deflection shot from senior Amy Lewis (Hainesport, N.J.). Senior defender Caitlin Browne (Middletown, N.J.) worked the ball up field and down the left side, finding classmate Karen Brewster (Chico, Calif). The senior forward shot the ball, from eight yards out. Lewis got her stick on the incoming pass, deflecting the ball past UD goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades. The goal was the 23rd of the season for Lewis.
UD had one of its best opportunities to tie the contest with 23:10 to go in the second half. Rae Everson sent a 20 yard cross from right to left. The ball just bounced over the stick of Tori Karsten, who was perched to the left of the cage.
Just as UD missed out on the tie, Rutgers had a chance to pull out ahead by two goals. Lewis was able to control the ball midfield and passed ahead to junior Sarah Dunn, who had just entered the game as a substitute. She had a five-yard advantage on her defender and moved from right to left, taking Rhoades out of the cage to play her. She passed back to Lewis for the shot but she could not grab the ball as the UD defense thwarted any attempt.
The Blue Hens (3-10) were able to tie the game with just over 15 minutes to play. Florence Sijbrandij drilled a hard shot at the cage as teammate Karsten was able to put her stick on the ball to knot the game at 1-1.
The deciding goal came with 7:11 on the clock. Rutgers drew two penalty corners in a row but did not get shot attempts off on either. Off a free shot after a penalty, Katie Feeley (Collingswood, N.J.) hit a perfect pass to Hoh. The junior tipped the ball in for her fifth score of the year.
“I am very excited. Katie Feeley had an awesome pass. She walked up and I stepped up in front of the goal and put my stick down and it went in,” said Hoh after the game. “We have told ourselves the rest of the season that we want to go undefeated and that starts today.”
Rutgers took 15 shots in the contest, 10 of those coming in the second half. The Scarlet Knights had an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
RU is back in action on Sunday, Oct. 19, visiting the Tribe of William & Mary.
