BIG EAST Conference Holds Annual Media Day at MSG

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Rutgers men's basketball coach Fred Hill, along with senior guard Anthony Farmer (Millville, N.J.) and junior center Hamady Ndiaye (Dakar Senegal), were the Scarlet Knights' representatives at the annual BIG EAST Conference Men's Basketball Media Day, held today at Madison Square Garden. RU was selected 12th in the league’s preseason poll, which was voted upon by the head coaches.
The event opened with remarks from Commissioner Michael Tranghese before the players and coaches were interviewed by print, radio and television media. The media turnout was among the largest in league history.
Connecticut was tabbed as the favorite to win the 2008-09 BIG EAST regular-season title in the poll. The Huskies received nine first-place votes and a total of 214 points. Four teams received first-place votes. Those four squads – UConn, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame -- were bunched at the top of the poll. Louisville and Pitt, which had three first-place votes each, finished with 205 and 200 points, respectively. Notre Dame received one first-place vote and was fourth with 195 points.
Rutgers hosts Caldwell in an exhibition game on Nov. 10 before opening its regular season at the RAC against Marist on Friday, Nov. 14. The team returns seven players with starting experience among eight letterwinners. RU also welcomes the highest-rated recruiting class in school history into the fold. Ranked 19th nationally by Scout.com, the group is comprised of four nationally-rated prospects.
