Farmer, Ndiaye Named Rutgers Team Captains

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Senior guard Anthony Farmer (Millville, N.J.) and junior center Hamady Ndiaye (Dakar, Senegal) have been named team captains for the 2008-09 season by the Rutgers men’s basketball program. Farmer and Ndiaye were selected captains via a team vote.
“Anthony and Hamady are not only gifted basketball players, they are exceptional young men,” said head coach Fred Hill. “I am very proud of the team’s selection of them as captains. I have every confidence in their abilities to provide the leadership we will require to be successful.”
Farmer is a stalwart at both ends of the floor. The 2007-08 team MVP, he directs the offense from the point guard position, while often receiving the unenviable task of guarding the opponent’s best offensive player. A fourth-year senior who enters 2008-09 with three years of starting experience, he has started 88 of 91 career games and has paced the team the past two seasons in both assists and three-point field goal percentage. Farmer enters 2008-09 in 9th place on RU's all-time 3-pt. FG pct. chart (.371) and 14th in all-time assists with 284 career helpers. Last season, he excelled the most at the charity stripe when the game was on the line, making 28 of 36 (.778) free throws in the final three minutes and overtimes. He was a 2006 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection.
Ndiaye is a defensive force who has played his best basketball against some of the top centers in the country. Last season, he ranked 10th nationally and second in the BIG EAST in blocked shots, while tallying 93 rejections, fifth-most in RU season annals. He was also a top candidate for BIG EAST most improved player honors. In just two seasons, has 142 career blocks, sixth on the RU all-time chart. At the conclusion of last season, he was cited as the team’s top scholar-athlete, best defensive player, and most improved player. A relative newcomer to the game, he started playing at the age of 16 after previously competing in soccer.
Rutgers opens its preseason tonight with a 7:30 p.m. home tip-off versus Caldwell College. The first regular season match-up takes place this Friday, November 14, at the RAC against Marist at 8:00 p.m.
