PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 17, 2009) – The No. 10/19 Rutgers women’s soccer team defeated the St. John’s Red Storm, 1-0, Saturday evening at Yurcak Field. Getting the nod on Senior Day, Kristie Lang (East Brunswick, N.J.) tallied the game-winner for the Scarlet Knights in fifth minute of the game. It would be the only offense RU would need, as the squad moves to 12-2-3, with a 6-1-2 mark in BIG EAST play. St. John’s falls to 10-4-1, 4-3-1 in the BIG EAST. With the win, the Scarlet Knights clinch a spot in their 10^th-straight BIG EAST Tournament, which will take place Oct. 29-Nov. 8.

“Kristie Lang, to score on her first start of the season (on Senior Day), was very appropriate,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “This was a critical match. St. John’s is a very good team. I thought we defended very well.”

Lang’s goal was set up by redshirt freshman Stefanee Pace (Kearny, N.J.), who brought the ball into the box. Lang took a shot that Red Storm goalkeeper Kristin Russell blocked right back to Lang. The East Brunswick, N.J. product did not skip a beat, booting the ball to the right side of the goal for her first score of the season.

Senior captain Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) saved a season-high eight shots in the match. The goalkeeper earned her 42^nd clean sheet to extend her position as the RU all-time shutout leader. The Red Storm outshot the Scarlet Knights, 11-9 on the night.

In the 59^th minute, redshirt junior Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) and redshirt freshman April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.) had back-to-back opportunities to get the insurance goal. First, Schacher ripped the ball towards the St. John’s goal, but the Red Storm defender blocked it to the side. Price corralled the rebound, but shot the ball wide.

Freshman Maggie Yahn (Sharon, Conn.) had an opportunity in the 76^th minute on a breakaway, but sent the ball over the net.

Rutgers travels to Ohio for a match-up against BIG EAST foe Cincinnati on Friday, Oct. 23. The contest is set for 7 p.m.
