No. 9/15 Rutgers Drops Cincinnati, 1-0, In Overtime

CINCINNATI, Ohio (Oct. 23, 2009) – The No. 9/15 Rutgers women’s soccer team needed just 49 extra seconds to upend Cincinnati, 1-0, Friday night at Gettler Stadium. The star of the night was junior Kelsey Dumont (Wrightstown, Pa.) who scored the game-winner for the Scarlet Knights, her second tally of the season. RU moves to 13-2-3 overall, with a 7-1-2 mark in the BIG EAST. The Bearcats fall to 7-10-1 on the season, 2-7-1 in conference play and eliminate themselves from the BIG EAST Tournament.
With the win, and Georgetown’s loss at DePaul, the Scarlet Knights boast a four-point lead over the Hoyas for second place in the BIG EAST National Division with 23 points. The victory locks RU into second place, giving the squad home field advantage in the Quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
“This team is very dangerous off set pieces, and we got another goal that way tonight,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “Julie Lancos sent a perfect ball into the box, Ashley Medcalf and Stefanee Pace helped to set it up, and Kelsey (Dumont) got the score.”
The Scarlet Knights earned a corner kick just 19 seconds into the extra period. Sophomore Julie Lancos (Belford, N.J.) sent the ball into the box, where redshirt freshman Stefanee Pace (Kearny, N.J.) took a shot that hit the crossbar. Dumont was right there for the rebound, corralling the ball and sending it to the back of the net for the win. Pace notched an assist on the play, as she leads the team with five.
The Scarlet Knights applied heavy pressure in the second half, but could not find the net. Redshirt junior Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) took the ball into the box, passing it off to Becky Wise (West Springfield, Mass.), who sent it to the left of the goal in the 67th minute. A Cincinnati defender kicked it out of bounds and RU earned a corner kick. Lancosgot a shot off, but it went left of the goal.
In the 80th minute, UC goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski made a diving reaction save to stop RU. On a free kick, senior Jen Anzivino (Middletown, N.J.) sent a rocket towards the net, but Kaminski was there to save the game. A minute later,Pacejust missed the goal to the left. Playing until the end of regulation, redshirt freshman April Price (Mechanicsville, Va.) sent a header just high in the 84th minute.
Rutgers dominated the second half defensively, not allowing Cincinnati a shot for 30 minutes. Overall, RU outshot UC 18-11, taking six corner kicks to Cincinnati’s zero. Making four saves on the night, senior keeper Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.) extended her lead as Rutgers’ all-time shutout leader with 43 clean sheets, recoring 10 in 2009.
Rutgers stays on the road for the final match of the regular season against Louisville on Sunday, Oct. 25. The contest is set for 1 p.m.
Game Notes

* Rutgers remains unbeaten on the road this season, maintaining a 6-0-1 tally in away games.
*Through 18 games, the Scarlet Knights have dropped just two contests, which ties the lowest amount to this point in the season in program history (in 2006, RU went 14-2-2 through 18 games).
*With the win, the Scarlet Knights could tie the record for most victories on the road with seven with another win on Sunday. That mark was previously set in 1986, when the Scarlet Knights held a 7-3-1 record in away games.
*Also with the win, the Scarlet Knights moved one game closer to tying the record for most conference victories in a single season (8-1-2 set in 2006).
*The Scarlet Knights now lead the all-time series with the Bearcats 5-2-1, outscoring UC by a 11-6 mark.
