Echenique Out for Remainder of Season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (December 19, 2009) - Rutgers University sophomore center Gregory Echenique (Guatire, Venezuela) will not return to action this season and will seek a medical redshirt.
Echenique had surgery to his left eye on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and had a follow up procedure performed on Thursday, Dec. 17. A full recovery is expected.
“The well-being of my players is always the top consideration,” said head coach Fred Hill. “Our primary concern is for Gregory’s complete recovery, so that his academic and athletic development continues in good health.”
Echenique started all seven games in which he competed this season. He averaged 12.6 points and 7.7 rebounds-per-game, while shooting 61 percent (28-46) from the field with 16 blocks.
