Feb 22 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 22, 2010) - Rutgers freshman wing Dane Miller (Henrietta, N.Y.) was named the Rookie of the Week for a third straight week and senior center Hamady Ndiaye (Dakar, Senegal) was recognized on the Honor Roll for the third time this season by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday. The duo helped the Scarlet Knights to a 1-1 week, including a 68-64 victory at DePaul (Feb. 16) in a game where RU battled-back from a 17-point deficit to earn the victory. It marks the second consecutive Monday that Rutgers has had two players (Miller, Jonathan Mitchell; Feb. 15) recognized in the weekly honors.
Miller is the first Rutgers freshman to earn Rookie of the Week accolades in three consecutive weeks. It marks the 15th occasion in league history of a player being named Rookie of the Week for a third consecutive week or more. The last BIG EAST player to achieve the feat was Carmelo Anthony, who earned the honor a record five straight weeks for Syracuse to close out the 2002-03 campaign. Among freshmen in league games, Miller ranks first in scoring (12.5), tied for first in steals (1.29), second in rebounding (6.6), third in assists (2.86), and fourth in blocks (0.71).
Ndiaye was also named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Dec. 21 and Dec. 14. Ndiaye leads the BIG EAST and ranks third nationally in blocks with 4.67 rejections-per-contest. He also ranks second among NCAA players in career blocks with 339, which is just 16 rejections shy of the Rutgers career mark (355) set by All-American and NBA veteran Roy Hinson. Ndiaye ranks second among BIG EAST players in field goal percentage in conference games with a .613 (57-93) mark.
Miller averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 35.0 minutes during the week. He had 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists at DePaul. Versus UConn (Feb. 20), he posted 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds in career-high 38 minutes.
Ndiaye averaged 14.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks during the week while shooting 85.7 percent (12-14) from the field. He had 15 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks at DePaul and was as a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Against the Huskies, he posted 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, while shooting 6-of-8 from the field.
Rutgers players have been recognized in the BIG EAST weekly honors nine times this season. Mike Rosario (Jersey City, N.J.) was named to the Honor Roll on Feb. 1.
