WICHITA, Kan. (March 15, 2010) – The Rutgers softball team (7-14) tallied seven hits and took an early 3-0 lead, but it would not be enough as the Scarlet Knights fell at Wichita State (9-10) by a score of 6-3 Monday. Freshman Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) went 2-for-3 on the day.

RU used all four of its pitchers, as senior Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) got the nod and worked for three innings.

The Scarlet Knights got on the board in the third, as sophomore Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) homered to right center. Rutgers would add to two runs its lead in the fifth to go up 3-0. Sophomore Lindsey Curran (Monroe Twp., N.J.) singled to lead off the inning, and junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) smacked the ball to third, putting runners at first and second. A line-out by sophomore Brittany Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) advanced the runners into scoring position for Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) who brought them home.

The Shockers scored three runs in the fifth to knot the game on four hits and one error. WSU scored three more in the sixth off miscues by the Scarlet Knight defense. Wichita State’s Kiersten Dixon delivered the game-winning hit with a drive just over the Bragg’s head. Dixon beat out the throw at second that allowed two runs to score for a 5-3 lead the Shockers would not relinquish. 

Rutgers will be back in action Thursday March 18, in Springfield, Mo., facing off against Missouri State in a doubleheader.
