PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 7, 2010) - Rutgers wing Dane Miller (Henrietta, N.Y.) was today named to the 2009-10 BIG EAST Conference Men's Basketball All-Rookie Team as selected by the league’s head coaches. Miller was one of two unanimous selections to the squad, along with Cincinnati’s Lance Stephenson.
“To be unanimously picked for the all-rookie team is a great honor,” said Miller. “I would like to thank all of the BIG EAST coaches for voting for me. With the help of my coaches and teammates, I feel that I have grown as both a person and as a player this season. I’m just going to keep working hard so that I get better every day.”
“Dane really deserves this,” added Rutgers head coach Fred Hill. “He has done a tremendous job. It’s extremely demanding for a freshman to excel in a conference as talented and physical as the BIG EAST. For him to do so is a credit to his work ethic, his passion for the game and his willingness to be coached. Dane is a student of the game and he has the potential to develop into a very special player.”
Miller was named the BIG'?EAST'?Rookie of the Week a Rutgers-record three straight weeks (Feb. 8, 15, 22). The last BIG EAST player to achieve that feat was Carmelo Anthony, who earned the honor a record five straight weeks for Syracuse to close out the 2002-03 campaign. Miller ranked second among all BIG EAST rookies in scoring (11.9) and rebounding (6.3), while placing third in steals (1.1), assists (2.6) and blocks (1.22) in conference games. In offensive rebounds, he ranked seventh among all players and first among rookies in BIG EAST games with a 3.2 average.
Miller was joined on the six-player team by Stephenson, Connecticut’s Alex Oriakhi, Providence’s Vincent Council, Syracuse’s Brandon Triche and Villanova’s Maalik Wayns.
Miller is the 11th Scarlet Knight to be named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team since Rutgers joined the conference in 1995-96. Current RU guard Mike Rosario (Jersey City, N.J.) was selected last season.
The 2009-10 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year will be announced at a press conference on Tuesday in the Madison Square Garden interview area. It will take place after the postgame press conference of the second game of the afternoon session has concluded.
