Rutgers Women's Lacrosse Takes On Conference Leader Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 16, 2010) – The Rutgers women’s lacrosse team (9-3, 2-2 BIG EAST) will travel to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown (7-5, 5-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m.
The Scarlet Knights are currently on a three-game win streak with victories over Connecticut, Monmouth and at Villanova. The 14th-ranked Hoyas have won their previous four games and are undefeated in BIG EAST play. Saturday’s matchup will be the 20th meeting between the two schools, with Georgetown holding a 16-3 advantage in the all-time series, including winning the previous 10 contests.
Rutgers is coming off a 14-6 win on the road at Villanova on April 13. The Scarlet Knights are led offensively by senior attacker Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) who has 43 points on a team-best 31 goals and 12 assists. Junior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) is second with 21 goals, followed by junior attacker Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) with 18.
Seven Scarlet Knights have double-digit goals on the season, including freshman Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) with 11, senior Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.) with 11 and sophomore Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) with 10. Senior attacker Meghan Flanagan (Medford, N.J.) is the team’s assist leader with 17 on the year.
The Scarlet Knights are led defensively by freshman goalkeeper Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) who has started all 12 games. She has a 8.90 goals-against-average which ranks second in the conference along with 117 saves (second-best in the country) for a .544 saves percentage, sixth in the nation.
Cantwell leads the team with 13 caused turnovers, followed by sophomore Rebecca Alley (Tewksbury, N.J.) with nine and senior midfielder Faith Richards (Montclair, N.J.) with eight. Richards also has 17 ground balls, while senior defender Emily Penn (Medford, N.J.) is second among field players with 16.
Five Hoyas help pace the Georgetown offense with double-digit goals, including Molly Ford and Ashby Kaestner, who are first and second with 35 and 23 goals, respectively. Ford also leads the team with 15 assists, while Kaestner is second with 10. Kaestner has a team-high 40 draw controls. Jacqueline Giles is third with 17 goals, followed by Jordy Kirr with 16 and Erin Lovett with 11.
Logan McCraw is first on the squad with 19 caused turnovers, while Sophia Thomas is the team leader in ground balls with 20. Starting in goal for the Hoyas is Caitlin Formby who has a 12.03 goals against average to go along with 87 saves and a .401 saves percentage.
