PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 4, 2010) – The Rutgers softball team (22-29, 7-11 BIG EAST) edged Long Island University (32-16, 15-3 NEC) Tuesday, May 4 at the RU Softball Complex by a score of 2-1 in eight innings. Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) tied Nikki Childress (2004) for the RU all-time single season home run record with her 12thblast of 2010. Lindley went 2-for-3 on the day with a walk.
“(Lindley’s) home run was a nice hit,” said Rutgers head coach Jay Nelson. “She sees the ball and adjusts to pitchers very well. Noelle (Sisco) pitched well. She forced batters into a lot of ground balls and our infield did a good job fielding them.”
Sophomore Noelle Sisco (Towaco, N.J.) toed the rubber for the Scarlet Knights, going the full eight innings. She allowed just one run on 11 hits while walking none.
Long Island pushed the ball through the left side on back-to-back at bats by Raylene Asman and Chelsea Martinson in the fourth. The Blackbirds threatened to score as Karina Cervantes hit the ball past the shortstop, but junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) charged the ball and fired home to get Asman at the plate and end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) started it off with a single to left field but the Scarlet Knights could not capitalize.
The Blackbirds tallied a run in the sixth, as Bianca Mejia started the inning with a single to left and Mariesha Marker advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt up the first base line. Asman brought the run home with a hard hit double to the left center wall.
Lindley tied the game with one swing of the bat in the seventh. With a 1-2 count, the sophomore took a low strike over the wall in left center. Junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) was hit by a pitch in the next at bat and took second on a wild pitch. Blaire Porter intentionally walked Bragg. After another wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third, Porter intentionally walked sophomore Kylee Bishop (Tacoma, Wash.) to load the bases, but RU hit into a double play to bring the game into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, RU loaded the bases with two outs on a single by sophomore Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.), an intentional walk to Lindley and a walk to Craig. Bragg came to the plate and walked, driving in the winning run for the Scarlet Knights.
Rutgers finishes up the regular season this weekend, May 8-9 at the RU Softball Complex against Pittsburgh. Game time starts at noon on both days.
