
Rutgers Softball Splits Doubleheader With Pittsburgh

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 8, 2010) – The Rutgers softball team (23-30, 8-12) split games with Pittsburgh (27-23, 10-10) Saturday, May 8 at the RU Softball Complex, falling 2-1 in game one and edging the Panthers 2-1 in game two. Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) became the RU’s all-time single season home run leader, surpassing Nikki Childress (2004) with her 13thblast of 2010.
Sophomore Holly Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) earned the win in game two, throwing a two-hitter and allowing one run. The lefty fanned six batters in the outing and walked three.
Pitt notched a run in the first inning of the second contest, as Ashley Amistade singled through the left side and stole second to start the game off. Holly Stevens advanced her on a line out to right field. After Reba Tutt walked, Amistade stole home on a walking steal and run down by Tutt.
RU came back in the bottom of the inning, as junior Jen Meinheit (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) andBrittney Lindley walked to put runners on first and second. Junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) pushed the ball to left center, driving in a run and knotting the score.
Rutgers went ahead in the bottom of the fifth, as junior Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) bunted for a single to the pitcher with one out. Sophomore Lindsey Curran (Monroe Twp., N.J.) sacrificed her over with a bunt up the first base line and Meinheit brought Alden home with a single through the left side, making the score 2-1.
Senior Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) toed the rubber for RU in game one, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out five.
Pitt got on the board in the first, as Niki Cognigni reached on an error and Holly Stevens capitalized with a hard hit to second base. Tutt brought the runner home with a fielder’s choice as freshman Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) tried to get the runner at second.
With one swing of the bat, Brittney Lindley tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth, smashing the ball over the left field fence and knotting the score at one.
The Scarlet Knights threatened in the fifth, as freshman Jen Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Alden lined the ball into right for what looked like a base hit, but Yvette Bravo robbed RU with a diving save.
The Panthers added another in the sixth inning, as Tutt singled to center to start off the inning and stole second. Bravo advanced her to third on a single to the second baseman. Kristen Cheesebrew hit the ball to the shortstop Bragg, who tried to come home but could not get Tutt. Nicole Lindley got the squad out of the inning with three strikeouts.
Rutgers finishes the three-game series against Pittsburgh Sunday, May 9 at the RU Softball Complex. Game time starts at noon and it will serve as Senior Day for Nicole Lindley.
