Mar 25 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 25, 2011) – Rutgers women’s lacrosse (6-2), after winning their first BIG EAST matchup of the season against Connecticut, will host No. 11 Syracuse (2-5) on Saturday, March 26, at 1 p.m. at the RU Turf Field.
The Scarlet Knights will participate in Friends of Jaclyn Week when the squad hosts the Orange, as little sister Genna Camiolo will be in attendance and serve as honorary captain, which she has done the past two seasons.
The team became involved with the organization in 2008 after adopting Genna, who suffers from pediatric brain tumors. Friends of Jaclyn is a charitable organization, dedicated to raising public awareness regarding pediatric brain tumors. Funds will be used to improve the quality of life for children who are afflicted with a brain tumor, as well as donating contributions to pediatric brain tumor research.
Rutgers is coming off a hard-fought win over Connecticut on Saturday last week. Junior midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.)posted three goals including the game-winner. Junior attacker Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough N.J.) joined Steinberg with three goals to lead the Scarlet Knights.
Senior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) leads the team on the season with 20 goals. Watts is second in goals tallying 15, while Steinberg leads the team, grabbing 23 draw controls.
Earlier in the week, Welsh was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after tallying seven points in a 1-1 week, including three goals and an assist in a loss to the then-No. 3/4, Penn and two goals and an assist to help the Scarlet Knights earn their first BIG EAST victory of the season over Connecticut.
Syracuse comes into the matchup after three straight road games and having dropped their last contest (16-11) against nationally-ranked No. 2 Northwestern. Senior Tee Ladouceur and sophomore Michelle Tumolo each scored three goals. Ladouceur leads the orange in scoring with 18 goals, while freshman midfielder, Katie Webster is keeping up with 17.
Rutgers is 3-12 all-time against Syracuse. The Scarlet Knights have not defeated the Orange since 2002. Syracuse topped Rutgers (17-10) last year in their home opening conference game.
