
Lithuania Defeats Croatia at Euro Championships

BILBAO, SPAIN (July 23, 2011) - After dropping a 75-67 decision to Serbia on Friday, the Lithuania U20 National Team bounded back with a 92-68 victory over Croatia on Saturday in the classification round of the 2011 FIBA European Championships. Lithuania plays its final contest of the Championships on Sunday versus Austria.
Lithuania opened and closed strong on Saturday, out-scoring Croatia 26-17 in the opening quarter and 22-9 in the final stanza. Lithuania shot 50 percent (35-70) and limited Croatia to 37.5 percent (27-72) from the field.
Rutgers rising sophomore Gilvydas Biruta (Jonava, Lithuania) is averaging 6.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in 15.7 minutes-per-game in six contests at the Championships. He is shooting 44.1 percent (15-34) overall from the field.
Lithuania entered the European Championships on the heels of a victory over the United States U19 National Team and a 3-0 record to win the Torneo Internacional de Barakaldo, which included U20 wins over Italy, Montenegro and Spain, all of which advanced to the qualifying round of the Euro Championships.
