PISCATAWAY, N.J. (January 9, 2012) - Rutgers freshman guard Eli Carter (Paterson, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after averaging 19.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 82 percent from the free throw line to help the Scarlet Knights to a 1-1 record last week. The BIG EAST Rookie of the Week last week, he is currently averaging a team-best 14.2 points-per-game and has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive contests.
Carter made six-of-13 field goals and three-of-eight from behind the arc en route to team-high 19 points in 67-60 win over No. 8 Connecticut on Saturday (Jan. 7) night. He also grabbed three rebounds and was a perfect four-of-four from the charity stripe, including a crucial pair with a minute remaining.
UConn became the third straight top-ten team to fall at the RAC, following No. 10 Florida (85-83 2OT, 12/29/11) and No. 9 Villanova (77-76, 2/9/11). The win also signaled RU’s first over a defending national champion after 11 prior opportunities. The last (and only) time RU downed two top-10 opponents in the same season was in 1981-82 (No. 8 UCLA and No. 6 West Virginia).
Carter scored a team-high 19 points with four rebounds and four assists versus West Virginia on Wednesday (Jan. 4).
In conference only games, Carter ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 20.3 points-per-game.
