Nov 21 | Softball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 21, 2012) - The Rutgers softball team released its 2013 schedule, head coach Jay Nelson announced Monday. Looking to reach their fourth consecutive BIG EAST Tournament, the Scarlet Knights set up for a tough slate in the coming season.
"We look forward to opening the 2013 season in Texas where hopefully it will be warm and we will compete in our first 5 games of the season," Nelson said. "Our season opener is a challenging game against Boise State who finished the season with an RPI rating of 57".
RU takes on Boise State twice in its first five games, with matchups against Iowa State, Missouri State and the University of Texas-San Antonio also slated in the squad's opening tourney. The Scarlet Knights travel to Fairfax, Va. (March 1-3), the following weekend for a five-game stretch against Cornell, Rider and George Mason, which RU will battle three times.
Rutgers then spends three days (March 8 - 10) in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where it will compete against, Sacramento State, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Northern Illinois, and Nevada.
The Scarlet Knights will spend their second consecutive Spring Break in Florida beginning on March 15. RU will play five games in three days in Clearwater, Fla., wrapping up its pre-conference tournament stretch with Florida A&M on March 17. The Scarlet Knights open BIG EAST play against USF on Saturday, March 3, in Tampa, Fla.
"This set of games is during spring break and at the end of spring break we open for the second year in a row in Clearwater taking on USF, which finished last year winning its way to the final 8 in the NCAA Women's College World Series," Nelson said.
RU returns to Piscataway on Wednesday, March 27 for a doubleheader against Hartford in its home opener at the RU Softball Complex. Nelson will then lead his team against Connecticut, its second conference foe, from March 29-30, followed by a road doubleheader with Hofstra (April 3) and a one-game set against Iona "On the Banks" (April 4). The Scarlet Knights continue their home stand with a three-game series against BIG EAST opponent, Georgetown (April 6-7).
"All of the teams in the BIG EAST are extremely competitive," Nelson said. "The last place team is very capable of beating the first place team, so no game is ever easy."
The Scarlet Knights hit the road and continue BIG EAST play with a double-header against Villanova (April 10), followed by a one-game set against Princeton (April 13). Rutgers heads to the Midwest to play a three-game weekend series against Notre Dame (April13-14).
The Scarlet Knights return to Piscataway for two double-headers against Stony Brook (April 17) and Syracuse (April 24), followed by a one-game set against in-state foe Monmouth (April 25).
The Scarlet Knights then head to New York for a three-game series against BIG EAST opponent St. John's (April 27-28), followed by a single game against LIU (April 28).
The Scarlet Knights end there regular season at home with a double-header against Lafayette (May 1) and a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Panthers (May 4-5).
Head Coach Nelson has cited their goals as "finishing in the top 4 of the Big East which would give us a real shot at winning the Big East Tournament and a great chance of earning a berth to our first NCAA regional tournament since 1994 and the third overall NCAA regional bid."
