Final Stats

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 5, 2014) - Continuing the weekend at home, the Rutgers women's volleyball team fell to Indiana on Sunday afternoon at the College Ave. Gym. The Hoosiers grabbed three straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-10.

"We have to learn to take advantage of opportunities when we create them or when they are given," said head coach CJ Werneke. "When they arrived in sets one and two, we were unable to seize them and that is where the match was won and lost.

"I give credit to Indiana. They came out an executed the way they needed to. The more experience we gain in this conference and the more seasoned our players become we will learn how to respond quicker and to seize the opportunities that present themselves."

Junior middle Mikaela Matthews (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Meme Fletcher (Overland Park, Kan.) led RU with five kills apiece. Senior setter Nicole Bayer (Concord, Ohio) put up 17 assists in the match.

Defensively, junior libero Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) paced the team with 13 digs.

Leading Indiana, sophomore Taylor Lebo recorded 12 assists. Classmate Allison Hammond led the team with 13 digs.

Set one started with a service ace by Fletcher, pushing Rutgers to a 5-2 lead. The score remained balanced, until Indiana created a four-point margin with a score of 14-10. The Hoosiers maintained control, moving the count to 20-13.The Scarlet Knights were unable to catch up, falling 19-25 in the first.

The second set began with both teams trading point for point. Although the score was tied 10 times in the set, the Hoosiers maintained the control of the lead. The Scarlet Knights brought the count to 19-22 on three straight points, but could not keep up the momentum. RU fell by the close margin of 21-25 in the second.

In the third set, Indiana quickly moved to a 13-3 lead and never looked back. Rutgers found some small runs, but it was not enough to close the gap. The Hoosiers took the third set, 25-10, and the win.

Rutgers returns to the road, traveling to Wisconsin on Friday, Oct. 10 and Minnesota on Saturday, Oct. 11.
