PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers hosts Atlantic 10 Conference foe George Washington this Sunday (Nov. 16) in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off in the 2014-15 season opener. It's Military Appreciation Night at the RAC and the first 1,000 fans will receive camouflage hats adorned with the Rutgers logo. All fans will receive complimentary team posters. The Scarlet Knights have a 74-28 all-time record in game one contests and are 1-0 in season-openers under second-year head coach Eddie Jordan after a 92-84 win over Florida A&M last season.
The game versus the Colonials marks the first of four straight at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights play seven games over 15 days to begin their inaugural campaign in the Big Ten Conference.
Sunday evening's game will be televised live nationally on BTN, with Eric Collins calling the action and Bob Wenzel providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer & Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The match-up marks the 43rd meeting between Rutgers and George Washington dating back to 1977, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 23-19 advantage. RU is 16-4 all-time at home versus GW, including 15-4 at the RAC. The teams played annually as members of the Atlantic 10 from 1976-77 to 1994-95. Last season, the Colonials downed RU 93-87 at the Smith Center. Myles Mack shot 8-of-12 to post 26 points in the defeat. On Dec. 11, 2012, Rutgers earned a 68-65 win over GW in the last meeting in Piscataway. Mack shot 5-of-8 to score 13 points, as the Scarlet Knights forced GW into 23 turnovers. As a senior at Rutgers in 1976-77, Jordan played the Colonials twice, winning both match-ups.
The Scarlet Knights return six scholarship letterwinners and three starters (Mack, Kadeem Jack and Junior Etou) from last season's team. Mack and Jack both earned All-MET accolades as juniors in 2013-14. Last weekend (Nov. 8), Rutgers shot 56.5 percent (35-of-62) to defeat Baruch College 86-42 in exhibition action. Four Scarlet Knights registered double figures in scoring, as RU limited the Bearcats to a 25 percent (17-of-68) showing from the field. Rutgers established a strong advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the visitors by a 50-38 margin.
George Washington, under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Mike Lonergan, opens its season at home on Friday (Nov. 14) night versus Grambling State before arriving "On the Banks." After matching the second-most wins in program history (24) and earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season, GW was picked second in the A-10's preseason poll. Juniors Patricio Garino , Kevin Larsen and Kethan Savage were each voted preseason all-conference, with Garino collecting first team and defensive honors, Larsen receiving second team recognition and savage garnering third team accolades.
Jordan and Lonergan both attended Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. The school also produced former Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson, Jr.
