Rutgers and FDU have played 11 times on the collegiate hardwood dating back to 1981, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 9-2 advantage. RU is 8-2 all-time at home versus the Knights, but dropped a 73-72 decision to FDU at the RAC last season. Senior forward J.J. Moore shot 8-of-14 to score 26 points, but Rutgers was hampered by 38.6 percent shooting overall.
The Scarlet Knights opened their season on Sunday evening (Nov. 16) with a 70-53 loss to George Washington at the RAC. Without senior team captain Kadeem Jack in the lineup, Rutgers was unable to manage the veteran Colonials, who received votes in both preseason polls and are picked to finish second in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Jack was sidelined with a thumb injury. In his absence, senior guard Myles Mack shot 4-of-8 to score 14 points, while freshman guard Mike Williams also made 4-of-8 field goals to post 10 points in his first collegiate contest. The Scarlet Knights were limited to 35.2 percent shooting and were out-rebounded by a 45-37 margin.
Fairleigh Dickinson, under the direction of second-year head coach Greg Herenda, is 2-0 after a 102-61 home win over FDU-Florham on Monday, when FDU shot 55.0 percent (38-of-68) and had five players in double figures. The Knights opened their season with a stunning upset of defending A-10 champion Saint Joseph's at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia on Friday (Nov. 14). Mustafaa Jones, FDU's lone senior, drained a contested three-pointer with just three seconds remaining to seal a 58-57 victory. FDU benefitted from a 16-6 advantage in points off turnovers and boasted three players in double figures.
