PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers field hockey sent its seniors off in style on Sunday, earning a 3-0 victory over Penn on Senior Day. After honoring senior captains
Jenn Staab (Marmora, N.J.) and
Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) before the game, the Scarlet Knights scored just 35 seconds into the game and never looked back in the win. With the victory, Rutgers finishes the regular season at 9-9 heading into next week's Big Ten Conference Tournament.
"It was a great win and an excellent win on Senior Day," head coach Meredith Long said. "It was really a team effort - a lot of different players contributed today and were able to make an impact. It's a really great way to go into the Big Ten Tournament with the momentum with wins in the last three games. The team is taking a lot of confidence from those three games."
"The two seniors have helped build the culture here and have gotten us to this point. They are both really special to the program. I'm really proud to have been able to coach them here."
RU came firing out of the gate, charging down the field and scoring on its first attack of the day.
Katie Champion (Egg Harbor, N.J.) had her initial shot blocked, but recovered to score the goal to give Rutgers the early lead.
After scoring in the first 35 seconds of the half, Rutgers repeated the feat in the final 35 seconds of the half.
Jasmine Cole (Montclair, N.J.) sent a pass across to
Rachel Yaney (Bridgewater, N.J.) who finished for her third goal of the season.
Early in the second half, Champion scored her second goal of the game. She knocked the ball in from in front of the net, with an assist to
Alyssa Bull (Oakville, Ontario).
In the second half, Rutgers' defense held off the Quakers to preserve the team's first shutout of the season. Penn had a sequence with five consecutive penalty corners, but the Scarlet Knights held them off. Goalkeeper
Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) made three saves, and also made multiple sliding clearances late to earn her first shutout of the season and the second of her career.
While Penn held a 14-12 edge in shot attempts, Rutgers put seven shots on net compared to three for the Quakers. Penn held a 6-4 edge in penalty corners.
Next up for the Scarlet Knights is the Big Ten Conference Tournament in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Rutgers has earned the No. 7 seed, and will play the No. 2 seed and host Michigan Wolverines at 3 p.m. on Thursday. For more information on the Big Ten Tournament, visit the
