PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (1-1) hosts Northeast Conference preseason favorite St. Francis-Brooklyn (0-2) this Sunday in a 5 p.m. tip-off at the RAC in the Barclays Classic preliminary round. It is Dollar Dog night versus the Terriers, as hot dogs can be purchased for just a buck. The game versus the SFC marks the third of four straight at home. The Scarlet Knights play seven contests over 15 days to begin their inaugural campaign in the Big Ten Conference.
Sunday evening's game will be streamed live on BTN Plus, with Danny Breslauer calling the action and Austin Johnson providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
Rutgers and St. Francis-Brooklyn have played three times on the collegiate hardwood dating back to 1971, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 3-0 advantage. RU is 2-0 all-time at home versus the Terriers. The teams last played on Jan. 17, 1995, with Rutgers earning a 97-50 win at the RAC. Six Scarlet Knights scored in double figures as RU shot 54.9 percent and forced the Terriers into 27 turnovers. The first two meetings occurred with current Rutgers radio analyst Dick Lloyd at the helm. He directed the Scarlet Knights to a 109-70 home victory on Dec. 7 1971 and a 100-87 road win on Feb. 24, 1973.
The Scarlet Knights evened their record with a 61-44 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. Junior guard Bishop Daniels shot 7-of-11 to score a career-best 18 points, while sophomore forward Junior Etou grabbed 14 rebounds and posted 11 points to register his first career double-double. RU limited FDU to 30 percent shooting and out-rebounded the visitors by a 49-30 margin. The Scarlet Knights led by 21 points at halftime. FDU reduced its deficit to seven points in the second half, but Rutgers out-scored the visitors 14-4 over the final four minutes to secure the victory.
St. Francis-Brooklyn, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Glenn Braica, is 0-2 after a 74-71 home loss to Army on Wednesday. The Terriers trailed 72-60 with 4:09 remaining and scored 10 straight to close within two, but could not complete the comeback. Senior forward Jalen Cannon had 15 points and 10 rebounds to pace four Terriers in double figures. A preseason First Team All-NEC selection, Cannon leads the team in both scoring (12.5) and rebounding (7.5). SFC opened its campaign with an 83-62 loss at Georgetown. Last season, the Terriers tied an NEC single-season record with nine non-conference victories en route to an 18-14 overall mark, the most wins for the program since the 2001-2002 campaign.
