PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (7-5) plays its final non-conference contest of the regular season, when it travels to West Long Branch to meet Monmouth (5-6) in a 3 p.m. tip-off on Sunday at the 4,100-seat Multipurpose Activity Center. The RAC and the MAC are separated by an approximate 37-mile drive. The Hawks are one of four Garden State foes on the Scarlet Knights' 2014-15 schedule.
Sunday afternoon's game will be televised live via the web on ESPN3.com with Eddy Occhipinti calling the action and Steve Bazaz providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary.
The game will mark the ninth meeting on the collegiate hardwood between RU and Monmouth, with the Scarlet Knights having won the prior eight meetings, seven of which took place at the RAC. Rutgers downed MU, 79-56, at the MAC on Dec. 18, 2010. In the last meeting at the RAC on Dec. 12, 2011, five Scarlet Knights scored in double figures to help Rutgers to an 81-66 victory. After making just three of its initial 17 field goal attempts to trail by 10 points early, RU shot 58.1 percent (18-31) in the second half to earn the win.
Freshman guard Mike Williams shot 9-of-15 to score a career-high 22 points to help Rutgers to a 79-54 home win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday night. The Scarlet Knights held the Pioneers to just 27 percent shooting (15-of-55), the lowest percentage for an RU opponent this season. Senior guard Myles Mack joined Williams in double figures with 19 points, while also dishing out six assists. Rutgers forced 18 SHU miscues to benefit from a 23-4 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
Mack is tied for third in the Big Ten and is 24th nationally in steals (2.4), fourth in the league minutes played (35.5) and seventh in assists (4.8). Senior forward Kadeem Jack is first in the conference offensive rebounding (2.9) and sixth in rebounding (7.2).
Monmouth, under the direction of fourth-year head coach King Rice and a member of the MAAC, suffered a 71-46 home loss to St. Francis-Brooklyn on Tuesday. The Hawks shot 37.3 percent (19-of-51) and were out-rebounded by a 42-24 margin. Junior guard Deon Jones leads MU in scoring with a 12.7 average, while sophomore guard Justin Robinson contributes 10.6 points-per-contest.
