Rutgers Game Notes
Dec. 8, 2014
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - After four straight games away from the RAC, earning wins over Clemson and Vanderbilt, Rutgers (4-4) returns home to host New Hampshire (5-2) in a 7 p.m. tip off on Tuesday (Dec. 9). On the heels of contests against SEC, ACC (2) and Big East foes, the Scarlet Knights strength of schedule is currently rated 33rd nationally by the ESPN Daily RPI, which is second in the Big Ten behind Wisconsin (31). It will be Two Dollar Popcorn Tuesday versus the Wildcats, as fans can purchase popcorn for just two dollars.
Tuesday evening's game will be televised live nationally on BTN, with Josh Lewin calling the action and Bob Wenzel providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
Rutgers and New Hampshire have met three times on the collegiate hardwood dating back to 1979, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 3-0 advantage in victories, all at the RAC. The last meeting occurred on December 6, 2006, and resulted in a 55-48 RU win as Marquis Webb scored 14 points and Anthony Farmer added 12 for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers is coming off an 81-54 loss at Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Myles Mack and freshman guard Mike Williams both scored 15 points, but it was not enough, as SHU benefitted from a 27-8 advantage in points-off-turnovers. The Scarlet Knights held an early lead, but struggled to find their shot, making just 30.3 percent (20-of-66) of their field goal attempts and 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from behind the arc.
Mack leads the Big Ten and is fifth nationally in steals (3.25), while placing third in the Conference and 49th nationally in minutes played (36.0). Senior forward Kadeem Jack leads the league and 28th nationally in offensive rebounds (3.7), while sophomore forward Junior Etou is tied for sixth in the B1G in rebounding (7.3).
New Hampshire, under the leadership of 10th-year head coach Bill Herrion, is coming off its fourth straight victory, a 96-45 home win over Wheelock College on Saturday evening. Senior co-captain Tommy McDonnell posted a career-high 16 points as UNH shot 61.3 percent (38-of-62). The Wildcats rank 24th nationally in scoring defense (56.9), 25th in free throw percentage (75.0), 40th in field goal percentage defense (37.5) and 43rd in turnover margin (3.4).
