Rosa Earns American Co-Rookie of the Year

CLEARWATER, Fla. (May 20, 2014) - True freshman pitcher Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) of the Rutgers baseball team was named American Athletic Conference Co-Rookie of the Year in announcement from the league at the tournament opening ceremonies Tuesday. He joins Jake Daubert (1998) and Bobby Brownlie (2000) as Scarlet Knights to win conference Rookie of the Year.
Entering the weekend starting rotation in week four, Rosa did not allow an earned run in five of his 10 starts on the season. The right-hander pitched to a team-best 2.28 ERA in 14 appearances overall, with opposing hitters batting .219 against. In addition, he allowed 14 less hits (57) than innings pitched (71.0).
Rosa (6-2) earned six wins on the season to become the first Rutgers freshman to pick up that many since Matt Giannini in 2006. Keeping hitters off balance, he led the league with 14.96 fly outs per game and had a WHIP of 1.06.
This honor comes after earning a spot on the American Weekly Honor Roll four times during the year. He permitted only four earned runs over his last 41.2 innings in the regular season.
Rosa shares the honor with Andrew Lantrip of Houston, who worked to a 1.64 ERA in 33 innings for the season.
